Is this Church of the Grey thing serious? Didn't I read something like this in a novel once?

Definitely. On both questions. We're both serious and (partially) inspired by fiction: as we value fiction the same as fact when it comes to investigating values, concepts, religion, perspectives, inspiration, knowledge and wisdom, we see nothing wrong with that at all.

Oh, and the novel was 'Where Angels Fear' by Rebecca Levene and Simon Winstone, and comes highly recommended along with most stuff featuring Bernice Summerfield. Again we must stress that we're still serious about this.
